“Thank you. You… you all saved my life,” Kiara said as she approached. She looked at the cub—her face was filled with sorrow as well.

Not a single person in the group appeared to be happy over the turn of events. I looked at the woman we’d saved. “It’s no problem. Every human remaining is precious. Too many of us have died already. I just wish we’d known this bear had a cub. We might have been able to save you without killing her. What are we going to do now? We can’t just leave the poor cub here. It would be dead within a day.”

Rowan’s eyes filled with tears at the mention of leaving the cub to die. “We just killed its mother,” Rowan said with a sniffle. “We can’t leave it to die.”

Cody looked pensively at the dead bear before his jaw tightened and resolve filled his eyes. “Rowan’s right, we cant just abandon it,” he said.

Magnus stood up and said, “I’ll take care of it—I have that collar from the dungeon. I’ll raise it, train it and help it survive.”

I tried to take a few moments to discuss the pros and cons of taking on a baby bear—the logistics and the risks—but Magnus didn’t care.

Magnus pulled out the Collar he’d gotten back in the dungeon, then placed it around the cub’s neck. After a few moments, I pulled up the cub’s information again.
